The argument for the continuous presence of a living “Divine Proof” (Hujjah)—specifically Imam Al-Mahdi—is rooted in the metaphysical necessity of the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr). This proof can be summarized through three core pillars:

1. The Necessity of a Spiritually Compatible Recipient The Night of Decree is a recurring, annual event that persists until the Day of Judgment. During this night, the Quran states that the angels and the Spirit descend. Metaphysically, celestial beings require a recipient who shares a compatible ontological status or spiritual rank. Only an Infallible (Ma’sum) possesses the spiritual capacity to interface with these heavenly hosts. Therefore, the ongoing existence of the Night of Decree necessitates the continuous presence of an Infallible Imam on Earth in every era.

2. Distinction Between Legislative and Executive Descent To maintain the finality of Prophet Muhammad’s mission, a distinction is made between two types of angelic descent:

  • Legislative Revelation (Wahi al-Tashri’i): The delivery of divine law and scripture, which concluded with the Seal of the Prophets.
  • The Divine Command (Al-Amr): The delivery of the “executive” decrees for the coming year. As evidenced by Quranic references to the “revelation” (inspiration) given to Mary or the bees, angelic communication is not limited to law-giving. The Imam acts as a Muhaddath (one spoken to by angels), receiving the Divine Command and cosmic decrees without introducing new legislation.

3. The Imam’s Esoteric Function During Occultation While the Imam’s apparent roles (such as social leadership or direct legal guidance) may be restricted during the period of Occultation (Ghaybah), his esoteric duties remain uninterrupted. His primary spiritual role is to serve as the earthly terminal for the Divine Command on the Night of Decree, effectively linking the realm of the Unseen to the physical world. This ensures the spiritual continuity of the universe, regardless of whether the Imam is visible to the public or hidden from their perception.
